Inscrutables

The furthest places of the cosmos are home to beings beyond the ken of mortals. The true natures of these entities are not known to mortals, but some are believed to be the remains of dead gods, while others are what remains after something attempted to gain godhood but failed. These beings are known to have warlocks in their service,

When a deity loses their divinity, an act which requires incomprehensibly powerful magic, they do not die. Instead, the former deity and their servants are exiled to the farthest reaches of the cosmos, shells of their former selves. Despite their fall, they are still extremely powerful beings. Many are unable to cope with this new existence and descend into madness. Others dwell on their previous state of being, spending aeons plotting their revenge and return to godhood.

The only somewhat known text that covers this subject is De Pseudo-Coelesti Hierarchia, 'On the Hierarchy of False Angels', by Metimax Seption, a Teccan scholar who lived in the 10th century AUC. His book is a collection of mad scribbles, lucid discussions, shopping lists, and journal entries.

Other deities know of the Inscrutables, and being condemned to that fate might be one of the few things they truly fear. While there are always those who plot to take their place within the pantheon, those who have been there before are one of the most dangerous threats to their divinity.

The true nature of divinity itself is not a well-understood concept by mortals, but one of the leading theories is that the power of a god to a large extent comes from their worshippers. Thus, the gods are very interested in limiting worship of other beings, as there is only a finite amount of this power. Thus, an Inscrutable who wishes to return to their former power would have to accrue a following while opposed by all other gods.

Orders

Despite their highly chaotic nature, Inscrutables can be divided into several families. The study of the Inscrutables is almost universally done in secret, as they are the sworn enemies of all gods.

Archons

The highest order are remnants of deities from past ages and worlds. No mortal have beheld an Archon's true form and lived to tell the tale. An Archon who breaks free of their restraints in the Far Realms would be a threat on a cosmic scale.

Seraphim

The second highest order are the Seraphim, beings whose appearance are variously described as 'many-winged' and 'many-eyed'. Some theorize that these are fallen Solars.

Malachim

The malachim are powerful beings who appear as balls adorned with dozens or hundreds of mortal faces, each contorted in painful expressions.

Ophanim

Beings of pure fire which take the form of interlocking burning wheels.

Ishim

The lowest order of inscrutable being. They appear as single floating eyes.
