Codex

Jewelry (ring), legendary (requires attunement)

"Here is the entry on trolls from Ambercroft's Bestiary: Trolls are half-giants that can be found in most climates. Their regenerative magic makes them very hard to kill, but it can be disabled with fire or acid."

"The Complete Guide to Teccan Heraldry says that the sigil you describe belongs to the elven house of Culimen. However, their line was extinguished in 1283 AUC with the death of Astor Culimen."

"I am sorry, but I am unable to find any information on that subject. Perhaps you can try a different query?"

Codex is an adamantine signet ring imbued with the knowledge of a thousand books. It was created by Alba Aemus Cassietta, the founder of Cassietta College. She made it in an effort to store a second copy of all the books and scrolls stored in her vast library before she donated it to the Archivists.

Sentience

Codex is a true neutral sentient ring, with an Intelligence of 20, a Wisdom of 8, and a Charisma of 6. It does not perceive the passage of time or the world around it, and communicates with attuned wearers telepathically.

Codex was created to serve its wearers by providing information. It speaks in a slow and methodical voice regardless of what questions are asked of it. Codex states what it knows as facts, and is unable to infer what the facts mean in a given situation.

Gaining Knowledge

On top of the adamantine band is a shield-shaped setting for four gems, each containing knowledge about different subjects. In order to protect the information held within, the gems were separated from Codex itself. Each gem also lets the wearer cast a spell at will while wearing the ring.

Without the correct gem mounted in the ring, Codex is unable to recall any information about that subject. If all the gems are recovered and mounted in their slots, both Codex and its wearer has advantage on all Intelligence checks.
