The Purple Legion is the standing army of the League. It is not a large force, lacking the numbers to conduct major military operations on its own. Instead, each city-state is tasked with keeping forces of their own, which would be subject to the Legion's command if the Council votes to go to war.
The Purple Legion numbers only about 1000 armed soldiers, which is less than what the county of Greystone could muster if required. Despite being relatively few in number, the Legion is well trained and equipped, and always stands ready to defend the League.
Recruitment and promotion to the Legion is surprisingly egalitarian and meritocratic, with the ratio of nobles lower than in the Seaguard. Recruitment offices exist in all major cities of the League. Most recruits sign up for 5 years at a time. Every time they reenlist, their pay increases. Promotions are given to those who show an aptitude for leadership, and is usually paired with a contract extension.
Leadership
The overall commander of the Purple Legion, and thus the League's forces in war, is General Lysander Breckenridge, who has an ex officio seat on the Council.
Many of the officers in the Purple Legion are spellswords, which the Legion trains at Wolfgarde, its headquarters near Covenant.
