Orrick Mossroan lives with his mother and sister on his family farm just outside Honeypot. He's been trained by his mother Calanthe to rear various beasts of burden, which are sold or rented out as draft animals or mounts. Alongside his duties at home, he also works as a shepherd at the Fleecefluff farm.

His father Marvin used to be a blacksmith, who mostly made tools and farm equipment. He taught Orrick about the forest and how to wield an axe. Marvin is a soldier for the Purple Legion, and is rarely home.

Trixie is his little sister, she's always had a special place in his heart. She spends a lot time at Calanthe's side, despite her young age she often handles customers, as Calanthe isn't very welcoming, which is rare for a gnome.

At dusk, just beneath the tree line leading to the Halcyon Glades, Orrick was moving the flock down to the barn. He was accompanied only by his sister who was trailing a bit behind. Suddenly, he heard her cry out in terror. A lone wolf had crept up on them from behind and was about to pounce on Trixie. He threw himself between his sister and the wolf, receiving a claw scratch to his face as it knocked him to the uneven ground. It then locked its wide jaws around his arm with an audible crunch.

Desperate and dizzy, his arms pinned beneath him, he saw no way out. He prayed to Idun for the strength to protect his sister. All that mattered to him in that moment was safeguarding her. He heard no answer, saw no sign, but felt a righteous fury rising within him. The pain suddenly felt distant, and he managed to wrestle free his other hand and slash at a bristled leg with his axe. To his surprise, the wolf relented its attack and limped away. As Orrick embraced Trixie, he felt the pain return. Together, they walked back to town, Trixie supporting her brother.

In town he met Constantin Breckenridge, a Paladin of Sif who had recently come to live in Honeypot, and Colette Cornflower, the local herbalist. Together they tended to his wounds. As he was walking home, Orrick realized that his prayer had not gone unnoticed, and stopped by the Grove of the Unicorn to offer thanks.

During his convalescence, his little sister surprised him with a book to keep him company while he was bedridden. The book was an old handwritten tome titled Hero of the Northern Revolt. It was a biography of a great warrior named Temius Forian Regon, who long ago had led the armies of the Teccan Empire. While the book initially didn't capture his attention, he had nothing better to do and soon could not put it down.

The book told the story of when Estia rebelled during the last days of the Empire. General Temius was the highest ranking Teccan officer on Estia, and he fell to the forces of the League in the Siege of Greystone. His men managed to escape the battle and he was buried in secret, somewhere on Estia. When he finished the book, Orrick told his sister he would one day find Temius' grave.

After a week, when Orrick was well enough to walk again, he armed himself with his father's old scale mail and the biggest axe on the farm. He met up with Chorda Crashcart, who seemed to know tracking even better than Orrick. Chorda agreed to join him in the attempt to find the wolf's trail. On their way to Fleecefluff, they collected two donkeys that Orrick had grazing with the flock to protect them. To Orricks surprise, Caesar, the most aggressive donkey, seemed to take a liking to Chorda.

They quickly found the spot where the wolf had attacked, but another matter soon caught their attention. They spotted several small footprints, and putting their heads together they suspected they might be from goblins, a whole band of them. After a quick chat with the nearby sheep, and a raven to make sure the sheep spoke true, they confirmed that the animals had seen goblins at the edge of the forest. Orrick and Chorda took the news directly to Deputy Breckenridge.
